“In August, policymakers introduced a new bill that would allocate $250 million to address social isolation and loneliness among older adults. Notably, it would require the Secretary of Health and Human Services to provide grants to Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) and other community-based organizations, which in turn would use the funds to develop, implement, and evaluate programs that foster connectedness.

“To those of us who work on solutions for social isolation and loneliness, this would be a welcome form of support. On the Massachusetts Taskforce to End Loneliness and Build Community, we have heard from program directors and community members across the state that there is a strong need to improve people’s social well-being, but insufficient resources to do so. AAAs and other community-based organizations are ready and motivated to put these federal dollars to work.”
